Making the Crystal Archer[]
"Some insight into the process of making the Crystal Archer. For the record, I'm a bit obsessed with the vintage Saga of Crystar toy line from Remco. Couldn't tell? Seeing them on the racks as a kid straight up hypnotized me. That balance between the translucent blue and green crystal good guys countered with the orange and red lava bad dudes was so elemental and stunning to me! So to have the opportunity to collaborate with the Battle Tribes brand and bring one of my favorite childhood figures to life has been a true labor of love. I hope you guys enjoy this figure as much as I enjoyed making him.
The resin parts for the figure were all made practically. No digital scanning or printing. I did an old school shrink mold with Mold Star 15 silicone and some mineral spirits. The goal was to shrink the original figure head by 20-25% and honestly it was just a good guess. Once I had it, I dremeled into the bottom neck and glued in a Glyos switchpin making sure it would fit snug and center into a Battle Tribes figure. This took some time to perfect. The crossbow was also shrunk at the same ratio with a Battle Tribes sword handle glued into the bottom. For the Crystal Viewer, I knew an original one (even shrunk) wouldn't fit into a Battle Tribes figures' hand so I went through some of the old Crystar battle packs and found this odd grappling hook/axe weapon. After gazing into its weirdness and opening my 3rd eye I noticed the center of the weapon appeared to be a mini crystal viewer. How had I never noticed this before!!! I just had to get rid of those hooking blades and I might have the perfect scale crystal viewer that would really round out this figure nicely. So there you have it.
